DIY Blended Wet Distress

In my circle of friends, I’m known for collecting hopeless furniture pieces and reimagining them into something new. I like this reputation. I know it’s just furniture, but let me tell you a little bit about my process.

When I acquire a piece, like this one my friend found in a dumpster, I stare and think about this piece sometimes for months before touching it.

I try to picture what it was used for and how it can be reused. I imagine it’s new home and the type of person who will live with it. After I envision the fully finished piece in my mind, I get to work. This small dresser was going to be something special because it was already pretty to begin with. So, I began by spray painting the entire piece rose gold and let it dry for a few hours.

Next, I gathered from my collection of paints a few different colors- green, medium blue, teal, and red. I applied the green first all over the rose gold base. Next, I layered on the blue without letting the green dry, but only in most areas. Since both paints were wet, this created a blend of both colors. I blotched on a few stokes of teal and red in just a few spots. I wanted to create a layer effect. Once all the paint was on the cabinet, I took a wet microfiber rag and began gently wiping off the raised areas of the dresser like the edges and corners. I discovered that the harder I pressed on the wet paint, the more layers were removed, so I just applied uneven pressure to show the different colors until the dresser looked just right.

I let the piece dry overnight and the next day applied three coats of polycrylic. Make sure you allow ample dry time between coats.

I ended up loving this gorgeous piece of furniture! What do you think?
