A $2.00 Goodwill chair finds new life in this diy chalk paint chair makeover.
There are all sorts of chalk paints out there. How do you know which one to buy? How do you apply? Oh goodness gracious- now I'm rhyming and it's cheesy. That's because it's late. Bear with me!
So, after trying out a few major name brand chalk paints and breaking the bank, I was wandering through the craft aisle at my local Walmart when I noticed a small chalk paint section. I blinked a couple of times because the chalk paint was only $5.97! For realzzzz.... I figured at that price, I better try it. And you guys, I LOVE this chalk paint!
I picked up this nasty but full of potential chair at a local Goodwill for a whopping $2! I had dreams for this little chair. First, I removed the screws from the bottom of the seat using a screwdriver and cleaned the whole chair really well. I like to use plain rubbing alcohol.
Then, I started painting the chair elephant gray. After drying and painting a second coat, I started working on the cushion. Hobby Lobby carries some material called “Printed Duck” and this week I found some on clearance. I simply cut the material around the seat and used a hand staple gun to staple the material onto the seat. I usually do the corners first, then the rest of the edges. I’m not sure why, but I do.
After allowing the chalk paint to dry for 24 hours, I distressed the chair with sandpaper then gave it a good dusting. Then I used clear wax to seal the paint. It kind of looks like Elmer’s glue going on and I was worried about it streaking, but when dry, the chair looked and felt smooth.
Finally, I screwed the seat cushion back onto the chair and was quite happy with the results!
Part of me wonders if I would have liked the chair better if it was a cream color. Or….maybe it would look great paired with a cream colored desk. What do you think?
