I come from a family of fixer uppers. I remember my grandpa always having some sort of homemade concoction in a plastic bottle under his sink to replace store bought cleaners. I used to dab some vinegar on a wadded up newspaper to clean the smears off of his glass doors and windows. If something was broken, he’d roll up his sleeves and get a thrill out of fixing it himself instead of calling a handyman. And he didn’t even have You Tube or Pinterest to assist him!
Grandpa Val
My mom takes after my grandpa. She used to tell my sister and I to just get “Down & Dirty” and fix things ourselves. Countless times I’d find her unclogging a sink or fixing a broken toy. One day I remember looking for my mom and finding her outside on top of the roof with a snake (tool, not reptile) down the chimney trying to unclog another drain. Her golden hair was frizzy from the heat and sweat moistened her face. She resembled a wild woman! Call it handy or just plain stubborn, Mom and Grandpa taught me some pretty sweet values.
My mom & and I
But let's talk now about my Grandma. Talk about baking! This woman makes the best chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies I've ever tasted. There's just no comparison, so I don't even try. Recently, she published her own cookbook with all of her recipes as well as concoctions from loved ones and friends.

Sasha & I
So, my sister, Sasha and I, may not be as handy as our three role models, but we do get “Down & Dirty” and enjoy restoring pieces of furniture or repurposing bits and pieces we discover at yard sales and thrift shops. Together we started a little hub called Simply Kindred (Get it….KINdred?) where you, too, can find some stylish bargains. We welcome you to visit our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/simplykindred as well as our Etsy shops: Sasha's Shop and Amanda's Shop.
