I Don’t Want To Leave A Legacy

Why is it that my vehicle magically transforms into a recording studio when I finally break free and have a moment to myself? I’m guessing I’m not alone. If my song isn’t finished when I arrive to my destination, I finish singing loudly, proudly, as if the people

sitting in the car next to me can’t hear my off-pitch rendition of “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston. Sing on, fellow performers, sing on.

The other day when I was driving down the road, I tuned into the song, “Only Jesus” by Casting Crowns on the radio.

"And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy. I don’t care if they remember me. Only Jesus."

I’ve heard this song a hundred times and mindlessly I sing along, but for some reason that day, my mind paid attention. I repeated the lyrics....

“But Jesus is the only name to remember. And I, I don’t want to leave a legacy. I don’t care if they remember me. Only Jesus.”

In an age and culture of self-promotion and self-obsession, it’s too easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of building bigger and better and quicker and taller legacies- to make a name for ourselves and to be remembered as purposeful people, difference makers, who are worthy somehow because of our accomplishments or brands. But there’s more to this life than chasing the wind, just like King Solomon said ages ago (Ecclesiastes 1:14). There's more purpose to be found in spreading the name of Jesus than building our own names just like the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9).

What if we were remembered as children of God? What if what people said about us was something like, "I want what she had, and that is Jesus"? What if people couldn't even recall or remember our names, but because of the way we allowed God's Spirit to fill us with His love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, the people around us could remember only Jesus? How fulfilled in this current life would you be?

"And I, I’ve only got one life to live I’ll let every second point to Him Only Jesus."
