We have an excellent little ice cream shop within walking distance from our house. In the summer time, we usually bribe our kids with an ice cream treat in exchange for good behavior, chores, or homework. But the truth is, we parents are just looking for an excuse to eat ice cream. Terrible. I know. Don't tell me you've never done it.
The problem is, during the winter months, our beloved ice cream shop shuts down so we have to find a different solution for our ice cream depravation problem. Instead of driving to a local restaurant and paying $20 for milkshakes, I decided to draw from my recipe creating childhood roots and make my own. Lucky you.
#Aldi is my favorite grocery store. I spent $3.98 for this premium vanilla ice cream and less than $1 for this whole milk, and I made three rounds of milkshakes for my family! Don't worry- the milkshakes were spaced out between several days. The great news is- you can use whatever ice cream and milk you want in this recipe!
Scoop the ice cream into your desired cups. These blue glasses are from the #PioneerWoman and were perfect milkshake cups! Fill the cups approximately 3/4 to the top with ice cream. TIP: Put your ice cream scooper into hot water for a few seconds before scooping out the ice cream. This will help out a lot, especially if your ice cream is hard. (Thanks, Grandma!)
Next, pour the milk into the cup to almost the top of the ice cream. Don't cover the ice cream with milk.
Grab a spoon and stick it straight down into the cup and slowly begin stirring. You'll find that it's difficult to stir, so keep sticking your spoon into the ice cream until it breaks apart and you're able to stir. The milkshake should be pretty thick. You can add a little bit more milk if you want it thinner or more ice cream if you like the consistency of your milkshake to be thick.
If you're feeling fancy, add some creative mix-ins to accommodate your cravings like chocolate chips, nuts, syrup, caramel, m&m's, oreos- oh my! Tonight I was craving cinnamon, so I dashed some on the top of my milkshake and I suddenly felt like a sophisticated adult. :) Trust me, these are delicious!
Sorry- I don't measure! But, here's the recipe:
RECIPE
Ingredients:
Ice cream of your choice
Milk of your choice
Optional Mix Ins: Peanut butter, syrups, candies, fruit, cinnamon
Directions:
1. Fill up your fancy milkshake cup 3/4 of the way with your ice cream choice.
2. Add milk to almost the top of the ice cream.
3. Stick a spoon all the way down to the bottom of the cup and do so a few times to break up the ice cream.
4. Stir slowly until you reach desired consistency. Add a little more milk for a thinner milkshake or more ice cream for a thicker one.
5. Stir in your additional mix-ins if any.
6. Share the shake with your loved ones, but not the recipe. A good cook keeps a handful of culinary secrets. :)
